Judges comment on school art competition

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to the Science Festival Art Competition with the theme of Things We Throw Away. Eleven primary schools entered the competition from Awliscombe, Feniton, Newton Poppleford, Offwell, Payhembury, Sidbury, Sidmouth, St. John’s, Tipton St John, West Hill and Whimple. The three judges, who were artists visiting from North Wales, commented: “We found it challenging to select winners as the standard was so high. Well done to the teachers for inspiring such thoughtful, original, passionate and colourful work. We are full of hope for the future with children so caring for our beautiful world. We finally selected across schools and ages, but all are to be commended.”

Judges comments on the winning schools

Feniton Primary School Year 3

Trees and Pencil Shavings – what a wonderful idea linking pencils to trees and using pencil shavings, a waste product of pencils to represent trees and leaves. A brilliantly executed and fun piece, well done!

Awliscombe CofE Primary Kingfisher Class Year 5/6

A Wasteful Current – an impactful piece of work! Full of exciting ideas and careful drawings cleverly depicting floating waste packaging being taken out to sea. The quality of the drawings and the ideas behind them is excellent.

Feniton Primary School Year 6

Throw away comments can help change the world – a unique interpretation of the brief, creative use of graffiti style writing using mixed media. The artwork is highly individual and demonstrates a good understanding of environmental issues.

Highly Commended comments

Sidmouth Primary – Ospreys Class Year 5/6

Aluminium Recycling cut up tins turned into flowers – really eye catching and appropriate choice as tin cans commonly litter the countryside so are really worth recycling. It was good to see the written analysis of the piece which helped to crystallise what the pupils had learnt through creating the piece.

Sidmouth Primary – Eagles Class Year 5/6

An interesting piece illustrating thought provoking ideas on waste and contributors to landfill sites.

West Hill Primary School Year 4

A realistic piece informed by primary research, looking into waste bins to see exactly what types of packaging they contain.

Awliscombe Cof E Primary – Swans and Cygnets

Creating their piece using waste materials with newspaper as the background made for a really original and eye-catching piece, well done.

Sidbury Primary School Year 6

Artwork showing sea creatures affected by plastic pollution. This piece really helps raise awareness of the environmental catastrophe plastics are causing to marine life. Each picture telling its own personal story.
