Ada Lovelace Day

Tuesday 13th October 2026 3:00PM – 9:15PM
Location/Venue: Cellar Bar, Kennaway House, EX10 8NG

Ada Lovelace Day is an annual celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). It takes place in October and is named after Ada Lovelace, widely recognised as the world’s first computer programmer for her pioneering work on Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine in the 19th century.

The day provides an opportunity to celebrate the many women who have made, and continue to make, important contributions to science and technology, while highlighting the opportunities available to future generations. It also aims to challenge stereotypes, raise the profile of women in STEM and create role models who encourage girls and young women to see STEM subjects and careers as possibilities for them.

As part of the Sidmouth Science Festival, we are pleased to mark Ada Lovelace Day with three inspiring female speakers, each sharing their knowledge, experience and enthusiasm for their field.

  • Offshore Wind – The Celtic Sea Powerhouse by Kerry Hayes – Project Development Manager, Simply Blue Group at 3:00PM. This talk is in the regular monthly Café Scientifique slot which takes place on the second Tuesday of each month. A small charge of £2.50 includes a hot drink.
  • The science of health screening by Dr Angela Elisabeth Raffle, Bristol University at 7:00PM. This event is free.
  • Screening for prostate cancer by Professor Jenny Donovan, Professor of Social Medicine, University of Bristol at 8:15PM. This event is free.

By celebrating women in STEM and sharing their stories, we hope to inspire curiosity, broaden horizons and encourage everyone to explore the many opportunities that science and technology can offer.

Sidmouth Café Scientifique

Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration held annually on the second Tuesday of October. The second Tuesday of each month is also when the Sidmouth Café Scientifique is held at 3pm in the Cellar Bar, Kennaway House. At these informal events, we are joined by experts who talk about their work and ideas in a relaxed café-style setting, followed by discussion and questions with the audience. Everyone is welcome to Café Scientifique and there is no need to book. A small charge of £2.50 includes a hot drink. The monthly talk topics are advertised on the website.
