Café Scientifique: Cloudspotting for Beginners

Tuesday 17th November 2026 3:00PM – 4:30PM
Location/Venue: Cellar Bar, Kennaway House, Coburg Road, Sidmouth EX10 8NG

Gavin Pretor-Pinney, award-winning author and founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, will talk about Cloudspotting for Beginners

Gavin Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, takes you on an illustrated tour of the sky. He shows how to recognise many of the varied and beautiful cloud formations, from the fair-weather cotton tufts of Cumulus clouds to the flying-saucer shapes of lenticularis and the rare and fleeting undulations known as fluctus clouds. Gavin explains why clouds look the way they do and how they reveal the invisible movements of our atmosphere. You will understand why clouds are the most dynamic, evocative and poetic aspect of nature, you will learn how cloudspotting is the perfect antidote to the pressures of the digital world, and you’ll discover that spending a few moments each day with your head in the clouds will help you keep your feet on the ground.

Gavin Pretor-Pinney is founder and Member 001 of the Cloud Appreciation Society, which has over 65,000 members in 120 countries. He is the author of three top-ten bestselling books about clouds (the international bestseller The Cloudspotter’s Guide and the bestsellers Cloud Collector’s Handbook, and Cloudspotting for Beginners). Gavin won the Royal Society Book Prize, the most prestigious science book prize in Britain, and is a TED Global speaker with 1.4 million views. He has presented television documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4 and is winner of the Royal Meteorological Society’s Michael Hunt award. Based in Somerset, England, Gavin co-founded the Idler, a magazine that argues for the importance of downtime in creative thinking.
