An Introduction to Dartmoor’s Geology

Saturday 11th October 2025 1:00PM – 1:45PM
Location/Venue: Sidmouth Methodist Church and Church Hall, High St, Sidmouth EX10 8LE

Talk by Josephine Collingwood, Dartmoor aficionado, BSc, ABIPP, FGS.

Josephine Collingwood will present an illustrated talk covering Dartmoor’s world-class geology; its formation, characteristics and mineral legacy. If your curiosity is piqued when looking at the tor formations or sparkles in the ground, then this talk is for you, whether you have a background in earth science or not. The talk will take you on a journey through deep time from Dartmoor’s earliest geological history to the present day. There will be plenty of bespoke illustrations, photographs of features, and yes, there will be photographs of rocks!

Josephine Collingwood graduated in geophysics from Southampton and later in photography from Plymouth. Based near Tavistock, she has lived in or around Dartmoor National Park since 1983. When not rock climbing or adventuring she photographs architectural properties and designs unique infographics, maps and poster art about Dartmoor. Josephine’s previous book titles include the Dartmoor Tors Compendium and the Official Visitor Guide to Dartmoor National Park. Over the last few years she has also given illustrated talks about photography and Dartmoor’s incredible geology.
