Biodiversity Day – Life on the Hedge

Saturday 18th October 2025 11:00AM – 3:00PM
Location/Venue: Stowford Community Centre, Chambers Close, Sidmouth EX10 9Y

This free, hedge-themed, drop-in event, organised by the Sid Valley Biodiversity Group, will celebrate the wildlife, plants, and seasonal changes found in and around our hedgerows. There will be a mix of hands-on activities, creative crafts, and short talks to inspire and engage all ages—especially families. Activities include:

brief talks on “edible hedges” and hedge management at the Donkey Sanctuary

hedge laying demo (weather permitting)

a guided walk along a nearby hedgerow

table displays on making a dead hedge, and making biochar from waste hedgerow materials

lots of family activities on hedge life including autumn leaf rubbing, scavenger nature hunt, hedge bird spotting, and hedgehog activities.

Approximate timetable of events:

11.15 Steve from The Donkey Sanctuary talking about their hedgerows
12.00 Emily Hobson-Martin will be reading her hedgehog book for children
12.15 Stefan Drew will be demonstrating what is edible in hedges
1.15 Ed Dolphin will lead a short guided walk around the ancient and modern hedges within yards of the centre
2.00 The Hog Shack will show you how to make your garden hedgehog friendly plus some hedgehog hazards to be avoided.

Tea and coffee will be available.

Taking place at the family-friendly Stowford Community Centre, the event aims to be a lively, welcoming celebration of local biodiversity—informative, interactive, and with a rich autumnal theme
