Prof Brian Golding OBE will be talking about Preparing for the unprecedented: a review of some of the worst weather-related disasters of 2021.
2021 was a year in which many parts of the world were affected by extreme weather beyond anything experienced in living memory – in some cases beyond anything in recorded history. Despite warnings being issued, many lives were lost, there was much destruction, and basic services were interrupted. In my talk I will look at the causes of eight of these events, how well they were forecasted, and how effective the warnings were. I shall conclude with some conclusions about what was common among them and how warning systems could be improved to reduce future impacts.
