The next Cafe Scientifique will take place on Tuesday 19th May at 3.00pm when
Dr Owen Tomlinson from the University of Exeter Medical School will give a talk entitled Scientific spam – the good, the bad, and the very ugly
Dr Tomlinson says “As scientific discoveries grow, as does the number of papers that scientists produce. However, there is a dark side to the publishing industry – that of academic spam. Hidden behind the scenes of day-to-day science are predatory publishers, groups of illegitimate business that seek to exploit scientific pressures and publish nonsensical scientific spam. This talk guides the listener through this phenomenon, alongside some attempts to get the better of this industry.”
Dr Owen Tomlinson is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the University of Exeter Medical School. He has an applied and research background in using exercise testing within chronic disease, using tests to help develop interventions and guide clinical practice. His teaching work focuses on physiology, rehabilitation, and sports medicine at the University of Exeter, where he takes a particular interest in teaching students about evidence – what is good, bad, and why. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a previous winner of the BASES Tom Reilly Prize for Research in Sport Science.
