Café Scientifique: Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) Fact or Fiction?

Tuesday 19th November 2024 3:00PM – 4:00PM
Location/Venue: Kennaway House, Coburg Road, Sidmouth EX10 8NG

The next Cafe Scientifique will take place on Tuesday 19th October 2024 at 3.00pm when Dr John Twibell will ask is Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) Fact or Fiction?

It is difficult to destroy the torso of a human body by fire but in very rare circumstances the torso of a body burns away leaving the extremities unburnt and items close to the body showing little heat damage. Thus arises the idea of Spontaneous Human Combustion (SHC) or perhaps “Fire from Heaven”.  John will describe how ideas of SHC evolved over at least 3 centuries and how some authors have exaggerated or changed facts to further the mystery.

John is a former UK Government Forensic Scientist who specialised in fire, explosion and electrical investigations. During a career spanning 40 years he also taught on university forensic science courses and taught fire investigation to fire and police officers across the UK and abroad.

You will be expected to pay £2.50 entrance which includes a hot drink. Please come prepared.

Everyone welcome.

This event takes place in the Cellar Bar, Kennaway House, Coburg Road, Sidmouth EX10 8NG
