Talk by Professor Brian Golding, OBE
Last year, eminent speakers presented the evidence for environmental change in the oceans, atmosphere & land to packed audiences here in Sidmouth, under the title “Our Fragile Earth”. Following those talks, many people expressed a need for guidance on how they could make their own lives more sustainable. My talk will aim to address this “so what do we do?” question. I shall start with a summary of the evidence presented in “Our Fragile Earth”, updated with the latest findings. Then I shall expand on the implications for us and for the world, touching on the question of how justified are the apocalyptic fears of many young people. The main part of my talk will then focus on ways in which individuals can contribute to achieving a more sustainable world in the context of disappointingly slow political progress. I shall approach this from two angles: firstly, the easy things to do – which many have already done; and secondly, the things that will make the most difference, bearing in mind that these will be different for each person.
