The geology as exposed in the cliffs and headlands along this 2km stretch of the earliest part of the UNESCO Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, is predominantly mudstones with some sandstone strata. This talk will ‘showcase’ the varied sedimentary structures, faulting as well as a brief look at some rather rare trace fossil evidence.
Many people are familiar with the exposure in the Budleigh Salterton cliffs of the junction between the Pebble Beds & Otter Sandstone, which is clearly marked by a significant change is sedimentation type as well as highlighted (almost like agiant yellow marker pen!). However, this talk follows these ‘desert’ beds inland a few kilometres to Woodbury Common and looks at the nature of the sedimentary (often quite unusual) rocks to be found there.
