Pupils at Newton Poppleford Primary School will be exploring the fascinating world of science as they take part in a series of hands-on activities to celebrate British Science Week 10-14 March. This year’s theme, Change & Adapt, will be explored through engaging projects designed to inspire curiosity and enthusiasm for science, engineering, technology, and maths.
British Science Week is a nationwide celebration featuring thousands of events across the UK, all aimed at sparking interest and excitement in science. The Sidmouth Science Festival team is supporting this initiative by working closely with pupils at the school, delivering a week packed with interactive experiences and challenges.
The week starts with a whole-school assembly introducing the theme and setting the stage for an exciting programme of activities. Throughout the week, pupils will take part in projects tailored to their year groups, including:
- Building an Orrery – A school-wide activity demonstrating how time changes through the movement of celestial bodies.
- Measure a Minute Challenge – Pupils will use creative methods to estimate the length of a minute without a timer, developing an understanding of time perception and measurement techniques.
- Rocket Car Building – Older students will design and construct rocket-powered model cars, learning about aerodynamics and forces before putting their designs to the test in an exciting race.
- Hands-On Science Exploration – Pupils will explore a variety of interactive science stations, experimenting with bubbles, reaction times, sound waves, ice, and more.
- Careers in Science – Talks will be held for pupils to gain insight into real-world science applications and potential future careers.
The culmination of the week’s activities will see pupils showcasing their discoveries and experiments to their peers, including the final demonstrations of the Measure a Minute challenge and the thrilling rocket car races on the playground.
With a mix of hands-on experiments, creative challenges, and thought-provoking discussions, British Science Week at Newton Poppleford Primary School promises to be an inspiring and educational experience for all involved. By engaging young minds in science in an interactive and enjoyable way, the event aims to foster a lifelong appreciation for the wonders of the world around us.
