Sunday 18 October 2026 | 11:00am – 4:00pm
Doors open 10:30am
Entry: Adults £15 | Children (0–17) free

Advance booking via Eventbrite is recommended to avoid queuing, but tickets will also be available on the door, payable by card or cash.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Dogs are welcome in the grounds but not inside the buildings (assistance dogs excepted) and must be kept on leads at all times.

This event is organised and run entirely by volunteers from the Sidmouth Science Festival and Norman Lockyer Observatory and we are very grateful for their time and support.

Parking

The observatory is situated in the countryside on the outskirts of Sidmouth 1.3 miles from the town centre up a steep hill. If you are travelling by car, there is some parking onsite and volunteer attendants will assist you to find a space. Please share transport if possible.

What to Expect

Enjoy a full day of hands-on science fun for all ages at the historic Norman Lockyer Observatory. Activities take place in the observatory buildings, in marquees, and outdoors around the site.

Please note that the observatory grounds are quite exposed, so check the weather and bring an extra layer if needed. Outdoor footwear is also recommended, particularly if it has been raining.

Your entry fee includes access to all activities on site except for the Jet Car kits, which are available separately for £15 each.

Planetarium Shows

This year, for the first time, planetarium shows will be ticketed (at no extra charge) to help manage capacity. When you arrive, please book your preferred time slot at the welcome desk to avoid disappointment. Show times are 11:15 12:00 13:00 14:15 15:15 and some are more suited to children. Programme of planetarium shows (PDF, 50KB).

Jet Car Build and Race

The Jet Car Build and Race activity gives you the chance to build and race your own rocket-propelled car. Jet Car kits (£15) can be purchased on site from 11:00am; they are very popular, so come early to avoid disappointment. Races will start at 3:00pm outside the main Observatory building, weather permitting.

Talks and Presentations

There will be some interesting talks on topics relevant to astronomy  taking place throughout the day in the Lecture Room. They will be suitable for adults and older children, though younger children may enjoy them too.

Food and Facilities

  • Jasper’s Catering and Daisy Blue Delights Coffee will be on site all day. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic and use the outdoor tables and benches or bring a picnic blanket. There are baby changing facilities on site.

Accessibility

There are a limited number of disabled parking spaces. If these are all in use, volunteers will help you find a space close to the main building. The majority of the site is wheelchair accessible and there is an accessible toilet. There is rough ground outside which may cause some difficulties for those with limited mobility.

Quiet Space

The number of activities on site means the day can get very busy and noisy! A quiet space will be available for anyone who needs to take some time out. It will be signed and in a gazebo towards the edge of the site, close to the coffee wagon. All children using this space must be accompanied by a responsible adult, and users are asked to respect the needs of others.

Photography and Filming

Photos, short videos and sketches may be taken during the day for marketing purposes. If you or anyone in your care does not wish to be included, please inform the photographer, artist or a steward.

Safety and Assistance

A First Aid team will be on site all day, based in the car park with a small room available in the main building for anyone needing treatment.

If you have any questions on the day, please speak to one of our volunteers wearing an orange or green lanyard.

Feedback

We would love to hear your feedback about the family day and any ideas you have for future activities. Please complete the form available in the welcome area or complete the feedback form on our website.

Thank You

We hope you enjoy your time at the Norman Lockyer Observatory.
